Brew Guide
New to coffee or tea? You're in the right place. Brewing a great cup is easy, and you don't need fancy gear. Here's everything you need to get started.
Quick Start: The Golden Ratio
- 2 tablespoons of ground coffee for every 6 oz of water.
- For a 12 oz mug, use 4 tablespoons.
- Like it stronger? Add a little more coffee. Lighter? Use a little less.
- Use fresh, filtered water if you can. It makes a big difference.
Whole Bean vs. Ground
- Ground coffee is ready to brew. Just scoop and go.
- Whole bean coffee stays fresh longer. Grind it right before you brew.
- Grind tip:
- Coarse (like sea salt): French press and cold brew
- Medium (like sand): drip machines
- Medium-fine (like table salt): pour-over
Drip Coffee Maker
- Put a paper filter in the basket.
- Add 2 tablespoons of medium-ground coffee per 6 oz of water.
- Fill the reservoir with fresh water and press start.
- Enjoy within 30 minutes for the best flavor. Don't let it sit on the hot plate too long.
French Press
- Add 4 tablespoons of coarse-ground coffee for 12 oz of water.
- Pour in hot water, just off the boil (about 200°F).
- Stir gently and put the lid on with the plunger pulled up.
- Wait 4 minutes.
- Press the plunger down slowly and pour right away.
Pour-Over
- Place a filter in your dripper and rinse it with hot water. Pour out the rinse water.
- Add 2 tablespoons of medium-fine coffee per 6 oz of water.
- Pour a little hot water (about 200°F) over the grounds just to wet them. Wait 30 seconds.
- Slowly pour the rest of the water in small circles.
- It should finish dripping in about 3 minutes.
Iced Coffee
- Brew your coffee double strength (4 tablespoons per 6 oz of water).
- Pour it over a full glass of ice. The ice melts and balances it out.
- Add your favorite milk, cream, or store-bought syrup.
Cold Brew
- Mix 1 cup of coarse-ground coffee with 4 cups of cold water in a jar or pitcher.
- Stir, cover, and leave it in the fridge for 12 to 18 hours.
- Strain through a fine strainer or paper filter.
- Mix 1 part cold brew with 1 part water or milk and serve over ice.
- Keeps in the fridge for up to a week.
Coffee Pods
- Our coffee pods work in most single-serve pod brewers.
- Use the 6 or 8 oz setting for a bolder cup. Bigger cup sizes make it weaker.
- Run a water-only cycle first if your brewer hasn't been used in a while.
Tea Time
Our loose-leaf teas are easy to brew. Use a tea infuser, a tea bag you fill yourself, or a small strainer.
Herbal and fruit teas (Hibiscus Berry, Peach Paradise, Butterfly Blue, Turmeric Ginger, Mango Treat)
• Amount: 1 to 2 teaspoons per 8 oz of water
• Water: boiling (212°F)
• Steep: 5 to 7 minutes. These won't turn bitter, so steep longer for more flavor.
• Iced tea: use twice the tea, steep, then pour over ice.
• Fun fact: Butterfly Blue turns purple when you add a squeeze of lemon!
Moroccan Mint
• Amount: 1 to 2 teaspoons per 8 oz of water
• Water: boiling (212°F)
• Steep: 5 to 7 minutes. Mint won't turn bitter, so steep longer for more flavor.
Matcha (whisk method) 1. Sift 1 teaspoon of matcha into a bowl or mug. 2. Add 2 oz of hot water (about 175°F, not boiling). 3. Whisk quickly in a zigzag "W" motion for about 20 seconds until it's frothy. 4. Drink it as is, or top with 6 oz of warm or cold milk for a matcha latte.
Keep It Fresh
- Store coffee and tea in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.
- Keep them away from heat, light, and moisture.
- Don't keep coffee in the fridge. It can pick up moisture and smells.
- Enjoy coffee within 2 to 4 weeks of opening for the best flavor.
- Reseal your bag tightly after every use.
